What is “Gran Lessons?”

During my Grandmother’s 90th birthday party, she said to me,

“Robin, I’d love you to write my life story.”

My Gran is a special person. Kind, loving, and probably the most wonderful person in my life. She is quite frankly, wonderful.

I knew I would do it.

And so began twelve months of interviews, writing, editing, and hair-pulling! As I am based in the United States and disconnected from my family in the UK, these interviews took place over the phone. Gran’s hearing isn’t quite as good as it used to be. After a few missteps, we learned that it would be best to structure each chapter as a “lesson”. Gran has been a lifelong music teacher and the term lesson just seemed to work. Whereas each mini-chapter tells a small vignette about her life, it comes with a life lesson, something she has learned during this great journey of hers. While it is best to read them in order, you can pick them up anywhere you like.

Friday Mornings, starting on February 17th, 2023.

Each week we will release a lesson via substack on Friday mornings. Each one is no more than a 4-5 minute read, and there will also be an audio version that will accompany each e-mail.

I will try and keep up with “one per week” but work obligations may sometimes get in the way.

A note on the subscription

The fact that writers can make money via Substack is a wonderful tool. However, the purpose of doing this was not for financial gain. It was to learn, write, and ultimately share my Gran’s story. We are thankful to Substack for providing the forum but all subscriptions are free. We hope you enjoy it. Peace and love.
